Can Science Slow Aging? Fighting on a New Biological Frontier

Episode Summary

Would you believe it if I told you that science will one day cure aging as though it was any other disease? Well, according to Dr. Andrew Steele, a computational biologist and science writer, cancer and other heart-related diseases are not the true cause of most human deaths - aging is. In his book Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old, Andrew introduces us to the cutting-edge research that is paving the way for a revolution.

Episode Notes

Steele began his professional life as a physicist. Growing up, he was fascinated by space, just like many other scientists. It was after his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Oxford that he decided that aging was the single most important scientific challenge of our time, and switched fields to computational biology.

In this episode, Andrew chats with Cathleen about developing therapies that are bound to eliminate the physical and mental decline associated with aging, what occurs biologically as we age, as well as practical ways we can slow down the process. The hope isn’t that we get to live longer for the sake of it, it is that we live longer in good health.

If you agree that it is vital to petition government officials for additional funding for aging services and would like to know how to write to your congressional representatives, here are a few resources:
